Hello and Welcome!

Picture
This is the image that got me interested in making a website.  While taking it (points to whoever can guess what it is first) I realized that I am working on some very interesting projects, but don't really have a way to share them with family, friends, and (this being the interweb and all) the public at large.  I've moved on from Germany to Ann Arbor, where I'll be pursuing a Master's of Public Health in International Health.  Consequently, I'll be shifting a lot of the content from travel and fun cultural quirks (if only I had the time...) back to public health.  I'll stick with my love of all things small and infectious, but I'll be shifting the focus on bacteria from those that do cool things in the environment to those that do cool things in the body (mostly do our detriment) with an added focus on how and why they spread.  The H1N1 Type A influenza (Swine Flu) will hopefully add a nice practical and contemporary element to the studies, so I'll discuss that if and when I ever learn enough about it to say anything meaningful.

Some notes on the title of this website:  it was also inspired by this picture, which made me realize that I packed up and left the country that I grew up in for a non-insignificant amount of time for somewhere else - granted, a country I know fairly well, but whose long-term textures were about as foreign to me as the surface of that object.  Carrying the metaphor farther, I'm putting off my end goal of attending medical school for a bit to pursue a degree in public health, so I have to get acquainted with some more unfamiliar territory.  So keep an eye out for updates!
