Rome and the Vatican

Taken during my trip to Rome in late January 2009.  See below for descriptions.

1. View of the Markets of Trajan, part of Trajan's Forum.  Saw continued use throughout the Middle Ages.
2. Defense tower built in the Middle Ages on the site of Trajan's Markets.  Originally part of a larger defensive complex, the bottom portion of the tower is all that remains today.
3. Soldiers of the Italian military standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Vittorio Emmanuele Monument on the Piazza Venezia.
4. The fountain carved by Carlo Maderno in St. Peter's Square at dusk.
5. View from the top of the dome of St. Peter's Basilica after a rainstorm.
6. Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in Piazza Navona, with the church of S'ant Agnese in Agone in the background at night.
7. View from the Palantine Hill with the Colosseum and the Arch of Titus.
8. Greek statue in the octagonal courtyard of the Vatican Museums.
9. Pantheon at night.
