South Luangwa National Park

Bordered by the South Luangwa River to the East and the to the South, South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is probably one of the world's greatest wildlife sanctuaries. Taken during my trip in June 2010.
1. Water buffalo - we normally found them on their own, but at night we spotted a herd of 500.
2. Thornicroft's giraffe, which is only found in South Luangwa NP.  They were much more common than I had expected, but they tend to sort of jump out of the bush and surprise you.
3. Fisherman on the South Luangwa River - half of the river is protected, half is open to fishing so that the local villages can get food.
4. Puku grazing on the plains.
5. Lions overlooking the South Luangwa River.
6. Sunset over the Sough Luangwa - the trees fell into the water when the river overran its banks in the last rainy season.
7. Elephants in the marsh (they also came into our camp the last night - waking up and looking out your tent to find an elephant 3 feet away is unnerving, but awesome).
8. Two lions hiding in the bush.
9. Zebra on the plains - the zebra in the park are also only found in South Luangwa NP.
