Wismar and the Isle of Poel

Taken during our trip to the Hanseatic city of Wismar in May 2009.

1. The rapeseed fields on the bike path between Wismar and the Isle of Poel.
2. The tower of the St. Marien Church, which is all that remains of one of the largest brickwork Gothic churches following the Second World War.  A reconstruction is currently underway, but it will take a long time.
3. Detail of an original fresco in the parish church of St. Nikolai, whose nave is one of the tallest in the world at 37 meters (121 feet).
4. One of the boats which serve as the fish market.  And yes, the fish are raw and served on a roll that way.  Delicious.
5. Wismar's old town and former harbor, with a reconstruction of a medieval cog in the foreground.
6. Path leading to the beach on the Isle of Poel.
7. Concrete ship used for bombing practice by German planes during the Second World War.
8. One of the city's former defensive towers.
9. The market square of Wismar with its fountain.  Each side measures about 120 yards, making it one of the largest in Northern Germany.
